The aquarium nitrogen cycle: what it is and how long it takes

The nitrogen cycle is the growth of the bacteria that turn fish waste first into nitrite and then into nitrate. It usually takes 4-8 weeks and it is finished when ammonia and nitrite both hold at 0 ppm while nitrate has appeared: from that point the tank can take its first fish.

A freshly filled tank is, biologically speaking, sterile water in a glass box. Nothing in it processes waste: put fish in the day after setup and their own waste builds up until it poisons them. The nitrogen cycle is the period in which that "nothing" turns into a biological filter that works on its own, around the clock.

It is why the first two months kill more fish than any other stretch of a tank's life, and also why no shortcut fully replaces it: you can speed it up, you cannot skip it.

What happens in the water, in three steps

Everything that enters the tank and contains nitrogen — uneaten food, faeces, a rotting leaf, a fish that died behind the filter — breaks down and releases ammonia (NH₃/NH₄⁺). It is the most toxic of the three: it burns gills and can kill within hours at concentrations a liquid test kit struggles to read.

Once ammonia is present, the bacteria that feed on it eventually arrive (Nitrosomonas and relatives). They convert it into nitrite (NO₂⁻). Bad news: nitrite is nearly as toxic as ammonia — it stops blood from carrying oxygen, so a fish in high nitrite suffocates in fully oxygenated water. Good news: its appearance proves the bacteria are multiplying.

Then a second group takes over (Nitrospira and similar), converting nitrite into nitrate (NO₃⁻). Nitrate is the end product and is far less toxic: fish tolerate vastly more of it, water changes export it, and plants consume it. When the chain is complete the three values tell one story together: zero ammonia, zero nitrite, nitrate climbing.

How long it really takes

Four to eight weeks in a new freshwater tank with no help. That range is honest rather than vague: it depends on temperature, on how much ammonia there is to eat, on chlorine in your tap water, and on how quickly the right bacteria happen to arrive.

Week by week

The dates are indicative: the tank follows its own biology, not the calendar. What is always the same is the order in which the values appear.

Week 1 — everything reads zero, and that does not mean ready. New water: waste has not accumulated yet. Three zeros in week 1 mean "it hasn't started", not "it's finished". This is the misreading that sends people to the fish store one week too early.

Weeks 1-3 — ammonia rises. The first step. It is toxic, but it is proof the cycle is running. Test ammonia and nitrite every 2-3 days.

Weeks 2-5 — the nitrite spike. The longest phase and the last hurdle: ammonia falls while nitrite climbs. No new livestock until nitrite is back to zero, and no rushing: this part is waiting.

Weeks 4-8 — nearly mature. Ammonia and nitrite both at zero. What is missing is confirmation that the cycle produces its end product: test nitrate.

Cycled. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate present (above roughly 5 ppm). The bacteria now process waste in real time.

The same number means two different things depending on the week. A nitrite reading of zero in week 1 means "not started yet"; in week 6, with nitrate present, it means "fully cycled". Knowing where you are takes more than the latest reading: it takes knowing whether ammonia and nitrite have already been seen before returning to zero.

How to start the cycle

Bacteria do not grow without food, so the cycle does not begin unless ammonia enters the tank from somewhere. Three routes.

Fishless cycling. You dose pure ammonia, holding it around 1-2 ppm, and wait. It is the cleanest method: no animal spends weeks in toxic water, and you control exactly how much food the bacteria get. It needs a bottle of ammonia with no surfactants or fragrance, and a bit of arithmetic on your volume.

A few hardy fish. It works, and it is how it was always done, but those fish spend weeks in water that damages them. If you take this route: very few individuals, tough species, minimal food and partial water changes every time ammonia climbs.

A planted start. Plenty of fast-growing plants absorb ammonia directly, before visible spikes appear. The cycle can look "silent": numbers stay low and it seems nothing is happening. Do not trust low numbers on their own — the bacteria are still needed, and still need time.

When you can add fish

When ammonia and nitrite hold at 0 ppm and nitrate has appeared. Not "when the water is clear" — clarity says nothing about the cycle — and not "when four weeks have passed": the tank decides, not the calendar.

Before the first fish goes in, do a water change to bring down the nitrate accumulated over the previous weeks. Then add a few animals at a time, ten days or so apart: every addition adds load, and the colony needs time to multiply to match it. Stocking a freshly cycled tank in a single afternoon is the classic way to trigger a second ammonia spike in a tank that looked fine.

If the cycle seems stalled

Several weeks in with ammonia or nitrite still high, the suspects in order of likelihood: chlorinated tap water (you need a dechlorinator), temperature too low, not enough oxygen (nitrifying bacteria consume it, so a little surface movement helps), or an ammonia load beyond what the existing colony can handle — too many fish, or too much food.

Rule out the most mundane cause too: an expired or misread test. Liquid kits have a shelf life, and nitrite reagents are among the first to go bad.
