New tank syndrome: symptoms and what to do

New tank syndrome is ammonia and nitrite poisoning in a tank whose bacteria have not grown yet. You recognise it by fish gasping at the surface, sitting still on the bottom or flicking against decor, in a tank set up less than two months ago. Test ammonia and nitrite immediately, then act with repeated water changes and no food.

It almost always happens the same way. The tank is new, two or three weeks old. The fish were fine at first. Then one sits motionless in a corner, another hangs at the surface with its mouth open, and within days one dies, then another. The water is clear, the filter is running, nothing looks wrong.

It is not a disease: it is poisoning. It is the single most common cause of death in an aquarium's first two months, and it is nearly always avoidable.

What is actually happening

A freshly set up tank has none of the bacteria that process animal waste. That waste releases ammonia, which is toxic; when the first bacteria get going they convert it into nitrite, which is nearly as toxic. Only weeks later does the second group arrive and close the chain by producing nitrate, which fish tolerate well.

Until that chain is complete — the nitrogen cycle, 4-8 weeks — every fish in the tank is living in its own waste. "New tank syndrome" is the name for the symptoms of that exposure.

Ammonia damages gill tissue and the nervous system. Nitrite does something different, and it explains the most typical symptom: it binds to haemoglobin and stops it carrying oxygen. The fish gasps because it is suffocating, even though the water is fully oxygenated. This is why adding an air pump does not fix the problem, though it does no harm.

The symptoms, in the order they appear

None of these symptoms is specific — disease causes them too, and so does a genuine lack of oxygen. What makes them readable is the context: a tank under two months old, or one where the filter has just been changed, many fish added at once, or an aggressive clean-out performed.

What to do now, in order

1. Test ammonia and nitrite. This is not optional, because the treatment differs if the cause is something else: without the numbers you are guessing. Both should read 0 ppm; anything above zero confirms the suspicion. If you have no kit at home, many aquarium shops will test a water sample for free.

2. Water change, immediately. 30-50%, matched temperature, dechlorinated. It is the only measure that lowers the concentration quickly: dilution. If the reading stays high, repeat the next day. In an emergency you can change water every day for a week — far better than leaving fish in ammonia.

3. Stop feeding for 24-48 hours. Food is the main source of new ammonia. A healthy adult fish fasts for a few days with no harm; it will not survive a week of toxic water.

4. Look for the cause. Worth checking: is there a dead fish hidden behind decor or inside the filter? Was the filter rinsed under the tap (chlorine equals dead bacteria)? Were many fish added at once? Was a medication used that also hit the good bacteria? Was all the filter media replaced together?

5. Add nothing. No new fish, no hastily bought plants, no miracle product. The one reasonable exception is bottled bacteria: they may speed up colony growth, sometimes a lot, sometimes not at all. They are cheap and they do no damage.

6. A little more surface movement. It does not take nitrite out of the blood, but a fish in respiratory distress is marginally better off in better-oxygenated water. If there is a CO₂ system, shut it off.

Do not use "ammonia removers" as a substitute for a water change. Some bind it into a less toxic form and can buy a few hours in a genuine emergency. But they do not remove it, they interfere with several test kits, and — worst of all — they create the feeling that something has been solved. The water change remains the first move.

How long it will last

It depends on how far the cycle has got. If nitrite has only just appeared you are halfway, and another two or three weeks of frequent water changes may be needed. If ammonia and nitrite are both near zero and nitrate is climbing, the end is close.

The part nobody mentions at the point of sale is that in these conditions not every fish will make it. Gill damage from prolonged exposure is not always reversible, and a fish that spent two weeks in ammonia stays more fragile afterwards.

How not to end up here next time

The only real prevention is to cycle the tank before putting animals in it. The three routes: fishless cycling with dosed ammonia, which is the cleanest because no animal spends weeks in toxic water; transplanting filter media from a healthy established tank, which is the most effective shortcut there is; or a planted start with plenty of fast growers, which absorb ammonia directly.

And once cycled, a few animals at a time: roughly ten days between additions. A newly cycled tank supports the load its bacteria grew on, not three times that in a single afternoon — which is how a second spike gets triggered in a tank that looked fine, and is the least recognisable version of the same syndrome.
